About

Tai Chi (Taijiquan) & Ba Duan Jin

Tai Chi (Taijiquan)
Origins: Evolving during the late Ming to early Qing dynasties (17th century), it originated from martial combat techniques, later synthesising Daoist Yin-Yang philosophy, Chinese meridian theory, and breathwork practices (tu na).

System Classification: As an internal martial art (neijia), while embodying health-preservation elements, its core lies in the combative principle of “subduing rigidity through pliancy”. The flowing, interconnected movements – reminiscent of a river’s course – demand simultaneous cultivation of physical precision and mental discipline.

Ba Duan Jin (Eight-Section Brocade)
Origins: Tracing back to the Northern Song Dynasty (circa 12th century), this practice emerged as a pinnacle of ancient dao yin (guided exercises) within traditional Chinese medicinal wellness philosophy. Its earliest documented reference appears in Ling Jian Zi’s Guide to Zi-Wu Cycles from the Daoist Canon.

System Classification: Classified as a form of traditional health Qigong, it prioritises breath regulation, musculoskeletal release and meridian activation. Characterised by its “external movement with internal stillness” principle, the regimen comprises eight structured postures designed for systematic repetition.
